The piano club began as a result of a discussion with Ian Gough, as he knew of a piano club in Glasgow. The idea was to get players together to share music, etc., and also to help others practise performing, as we all get very nervous playing in front of others.
St Vigeans church was chosen as it has the best piano in the area. Fortunately, the Kirk session very kindly gave its permission for this to go ahead. The club meets on the second Sunday of every month when 2 players perform for around 20 minutes each. This is followed by refreshments. There is no cost for this but the usual practice is a donation of about £2. This covers the cost of tea, coffee, etc., and also helps pay for any guest performers we invite along to play. Performers must be over 16 but the standard is varied. Each player chooses their own music and anything goes. We usually choose something we like ourselves and think others will enjoy listening to. Musicians get plenty of warning and choose when they would like to play. Everyone is very supportive and encouraging. The club stops in the summer months and over Christmas & New Year. We are always keen for new performing members but non-players are also very welcome. The above was written by Lesley Murray, who was the first organiser of the club. She is succeeded by Miss Helen Addison. |
