The Filling Station Arbroath invite you and your congregation to join with us to hold an open
air Christmas Carol Service in the town on Sunday the 17th December between 2:00 pm and
3:30pm.
Last year we met in Macdonald Park slightly later so dusk was falling. This year we want to
be more inclusive and more central so have asked permission from Angus council to meet in
Kirk Square before processing along the High Street, enjoying the Christmas lights and
ending up in Morrison’s carpark where we hope to have a stable complete with sheep and
donkeys. We plan to stop off along the way to read parts of the Nativity story then sing
relevant carols as we walk.
The main story will be told by narrators with characters in costume at each station and we
need to have a core group of carollers to hold the tune. We would welcome volunteers for
any of the roles to get dressed up, speak, sing or steward so if you know of anyone that
would want to get involved please pass this on to them. There are permissions to be
completed and to aid that process it would be most helpful if you could encourage those that
will attend, even as spectators, to let us know so we can plan the number of stewards and
how much space (and mince pies) we will need.
We hope to promote this as a full family event and encourage all the children and young at
heart to dress up as Shepherd, Angels, Wise men / Kings or Sheep! and to bring along
torches to light the way. We will provide song sheets and QR code to access the words for
those that attend.
The route will start at the Christmas tree in Kirk Square as we hear from the prophets. At the
Abbeygate entrance we will hear from the Angels as they speak to Mary and Joseph. We
will meet up with the wise men on the grass outside the Abbey and the Shepherds (and
angels) will join us at the garden beside Crossreach. We will then cross the main road (via
the pedestrian crossing) and enter Morrison’s carpark. There we will meet the Inn keeper
with no room and be directed to the stable to find Mary and Joseph and hopefully some
festive animals, where the last of the carols will be sung. There will be hot drinks (and
possibly mince pies) served at the Town Mission afterwards to warm folk up.
We know that this is a very busy time of year and congregations will be planning their own
festive services but we hope some will find the time to join with us and take our Christmas
hope and cheer onto the streets of Arbroath.
Please let us know if you want to be involved or will simply be coming along at
